On March 24, 2016, the Charlotte School of Law Access to Justice Journal hosted its third annual legal symposium. The topic was on Civil Litigants’ Right to Counsel in a family law and domestic violence setting. Our very own Associate Attorney, Courtney Ballard, was one of the few chosen legal professionals to speak at the symposium. Her topics covered both plaintiffs’ and defendants’ rights during a civil Domestic Violence Protective Order Hearing (“DVPO”) and defendants’ rights associated with criminal domestic violence charges.
These topics align with Courtney’s current practice areas, where she routinely represents defendants in civil DVPO hearings and on criminal domestic violence charges. Courtney also volunteers at Safe Alliance offering pro bono legal representation to plaintiffs in civil DVPO hearings.
This symposium is just one example where Courtney continues to positively impact the legal community.
Other honored speakers included: Laura Lawrence, Chief Legal Counsel at Safe Alliance; Faith Fickling, Supervising Attorney at Legal Aid of North Carolina; Erik Lindahl, Mecklenburg County Assistant District Attorney Supervisor; Keith Metz, Managing Attorney at The Metz Law Firm and Irene Massey, Victim Advocate at Safe Alliance.
